Northwest Artists

The following section contains information on only a few of the many outstanding Northwest artists. They have been selected to tell a brief, chronological story of the development of art in the Northwest since the late 1900's. There are many other artists who could have been included, and the intent is to gradually add to these pages.

Information on traditional Northwest native art is not included, simply because it is not an area of expertise within MoNA. The best places to see traditional Northwest native art in the region are the Seattle Art Museum, the Burke Museum and the Anthropology Museum at the University of British Columbia. The Seattle Art Museum has a trove of information, books, curriculum units and outreach suitcases available through its Teacher Resource Center: www.seattleartmuseum.org. We encourage you to make use of this resource to provide a fuller picture of Northwest art for your students.

The Northwest artists represented here have also been selected with a bias towards those whose work might be particularly interesting to young students from the region because the artwork:

  1. is narrative and thus interesting for them to discuss
  2. represents a landscape, cultural heritage or experience with which they might be familiar or
  3. is made by a well known artist, someone of whom they can be proud or who can serve as a role model.

Downloadable images, additional resources and links to other on-line information are provided for each artist. All books, videos and exhibition catalogs listed are available on loan from the MoNA Library with a $10.00 deposit.

Contact the Education Department at 360-466-4446 ext. 117 or tamerat@museumofnwart.org for more information.
